Health Problems - IELTS Cambridge 17

Nowadays, an increasing number of people with health problems are using alternative medicines and treatments instead of visiting their normal doctor. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

In recent years, an increasing number of individuals with health issues have turned to alternative medicines and treatments. In my opinion, while some of these alternative options may have occasional effectiveness, overall, this trend is negative due to the superiority of modern medicine.

Proponents of alternative remedies often cite historical evidence to support their effectiveness. For instance, traditional Chinese medicine has gained popularity in Asia, with many of its medicines and treatments dating back centuries or even millennia. Over time, some of these remedies have been tested and their effects verified. While contemporary health researchers may later identify the scientific rationale behind them, it is possible that there are still remedies in use today whose mechanisms are not fully understood. However, this lack of understanding should not be used to justify their overall significance.

Nevertheless, the majority of reliable medical treatments are rooted in modern medicine. Scientists have gained a much deeper understanding of the underlying structures of cells, viruses, bacteria, cancers, and various other diseases. This knowledge has paved the way for the development of highly effective procedures like surgery and the discovery of crucial medicines such as penicillin. The reasons why these medicines work are well understood, and as scientific advancements continue, they will only become more refined and safe. In contrast, traditional medicine, while it may have some effectiveness for unknown reasons, is limited in its applicability and lacks the potential for further advancement over time.

In conclusion, apart from a few exceptions, modern medicine provides superior alternatives to less verifiable treatments and pharmaceuticals. While individuals may choose to explore alternative options, it is important to rely on their regular healthcare providers who are trained in evidence-based practices.
